High Standard in LEED Building Technologies

Graduate students from Carnegie Mellon University1 chose Standard Refrigeration’s office building as case study for their Masters in Architecture. For the LEED Buildings and Green Design course, graduate students from the renowned School of Architecture2 recently visited and studied Standard Refrigeration’s office building. The following LEED Building Technologies were highlighted in the case study:

Water & Conservation:
Outdoor Potable Water Reduction & Water Use Reduction

Standard Refrigeration building was able to achieve the credit for Water Efficient Landscaping by collecting all rainwater in an underground cistern tank. This water is used for toilets and urinals.

Case study showed that exemplary performance was achieved for WEc3 – with 40% reduction in portable water use achieved also through the use of low-flow faucets and urinals. The facility also operates an on-site sewage treatment plant that operates on evapo-transpiration.

Energy & Conservation: Energy Performance Optimization:
Active Controls + Efficient HVAC

Lighting controls with occupant sensors to conserve energy. T-5 or T-8 lamps used. Occupant controlled thermostat that returns control back to the Building Energy Management system after 3 hours.

Case study showed that exemplary performance was achieved for EAc1 – with greater than 60% reduction in energy performance when compared to base-line established by ASHRAE 90.1-1997. Optimal building envelope design with highly reflective roof reflexivity of 0.84 and emissivity of 0.94. Innovative AHU design full-load and part-load capable with automatic cascaded condensing units. AHU waste heat used to supply heat to VAV terminal reheat system

A Solar thermal system provides DHW and VAV terminal reheat system. HRV for heat recovery and highly VFD AHU fans.

The equipment pad where AHU and other systems were located was compact and streamlined.

Material: Conservation:
Reuse & Recycling

The new building was constructed to substitute the old administrative building. However, all the furniture staff used in the old building was delivered to the new work place and is being used.

Standard Refrigeration Company provides dedicated space for storage and collection of recyclables. All kinds of materials are recycled in daily operation, such as glass, paper, oil, cellular phones, sheet metal, car tires, wood pallets, and grass. These materials are sent to get recycled.

Exemplary performance was achieved for MRc3 – with 15% reduction of materials.

Material: Reduction of Environmental Impact:
Use of Local/Regional Materials

The procurement of construction and out-fitting materials are based on the principle of reducing transportation distance. Over 40% materials were manufactured locally and over 50% were harvested locally.

Standard Refrigeration Company, Inc. 60th Anniversary!

Standard Refrigeration would like to thank all of our clients throughout these sixty years. They have made us who we are and have kept us alive within this difficult and competitive industry.  Beginning in 1947, we have taken pride in being different in regards to technology and construction applications within our field. Time has proven that this type of dedication helped maintain our status as one of the best full fledged Mechanical and Electrical Contractors in the Island. Our latest endeavor has provided us, in our own headquarters, with a Platinum LEED Certification, the most prestigious certification for sustainable buildings that can be given by the United States Green Building Council showing that we are now giving back to the environment.  Our office building is very dear to our hearts as its electro-mechanical systems were designed, built, and managed by our own staff of engineers.

Standard Refrigeration Co., Inc. has been in operation for almost sixty years. Over the years we have obtained different certifications and have become members of prestigious associations like SMACNA, SPIDA, ASPE, and NECA to name a few.  We are also NEBB certified for Hydronics, Air, and Commissioning for HVAC and Plumbing. We are also a Mechanical Contracting Firm with an ISO 9001 certification showing our true commitment to quality.  Last year we became members of the United States Green Building Council.

Our work is our presentation card.  We provide excellent service to our customers sharing with them the common goal of doing the job well.  Our on-time project completion record fills us with a sense of pride.  Our Safety record speaks for itself.  All of our Engineers and Field Superintendents have completed the 30 hours OSHA training courses and throughout the years Standard Refrigeration Co., Inc. has been recognized by the Puerto Rico chapter of the General Contractors Association for our commitment to Occupational Safety as Sub-Contractors.

The construction industry has gone through its hardships, especially in the latter part of the 1970’s with the energy crisis.  During this time the construction industry seemed to come into a standstill and more so for the Mechanical Contractors since the installation of Air Conditioning Systems in all types of buildings slowed down.  Instead of backing down we decided to diversify our company.  It was then that we branched out into Plumbing, into Electrical Contracting, and we expanded our Sheetmetal Shop.  At a time when it seemed that the biggest companies would not survive, we managed to stay afloat.

Diversifying our company into these trades provided our clients with the chance to have just one company doing all the work and hence finishing complete Electro-Mechanical projects more efficiently and in less time.

Projects that have transcended time and continue to fill us with pride include Centro de Bellas Artes de Santurce, the American Airlines Terminal at the Luis Muñoz Marin Airport, Plaza Las Americas Shopping Center, El Conquistador Hotel, Westin Rio Mar, The Ritz Carlton, Coliseo De Puerto Rico Jose Miguel Agrelot, Barceloneta Waste Water Treatment Plant, Bristol Condominium, Banco Popular at Vieques Street. Hato Rey.  We are currently working in the iconic Vanderbilt Hotel, the new Symphony Hall at the Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce, and the new “A” Terminal at the Luis Muñoz Marin.

Our expertise and experience in the installation of all types of Air Conditioning Systems provided us with the knowledge to design and build our own Custom Air Handling Unit. This Custom Air Handling unit, which ranges up to an impressive 200,000 cfm, has made our projects more efficient and in turn providing the building owners with impressive electrical savings over the years. These units have been successfully installed and maintained in commercial and office buildings including Plaza Las Americas Office Tower, Parque Las Americas Office Building, Administracion de Tribunales, Santander Tower, and Tribunal Apelativo to mention a few.

Throughout these sixty years changes in technology have shaped our company and the way things were achieved.  Things that were done by hand and with the venerable slide rule, soon became a thing of the past with the introduction of computers.  Our accounting department is completely automated as well as our estimating department.  Computers and specialized software in the estimating department helped us cut our take-off time substantially and make our estimates more accurate and effective.  As a result we started to provide clients with a more competitive price.  We are extremely proud of our sheetmetal shop since it is one of the biggest and most modern in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.  The fabrication process is automated giving us the capacity to fabricate a variety of ductwork which includes, rectangular ducts, internally lined rectangular ducts, spiral round duct from 6” to 102” in diameter, round double wall construction, and we are the only contractor on the Island with the ability to fabricate flat oval duct, single and double wall.

Most of our administrative and field personnel have been with the Company for more than 30 years and we want to show our appreciation for their hard work.  Several activities during the month of September are planned to help us thank our staff for helping us reach this monumental milestone.  Thanks to their support and loyalty Standard Refrigeration Co. is a solid business looking forward to serving our clients for years to come.
